ABSTRACT

Geoff Harcourt’s room in Cambridge’s Faculty of Economics and Politics is easy to find and to give directions for: it is the one with the poster of Nelson Mandela on the outside of the door. The poster did not just appear once Mandela had become respectable in polite company; it was there when Mandela was a prisoner on Robben Island, refusing offers of release which were dependent on his renouncing violence – the path of violence which Mandela had personally decided on and had pushed through the ANC. 1
