ABSTRACT
Sustainable development has been frequently discussed in recent years in the context of global environmental problems. However, substantive conditions for sustainability have not been analysed in a precise manner. While it is easy to construct a formal, imaginary model1 of a sustainable economy, one might also be able to present a counterargument that sustainability is impossible given the universal tendency of matter/energy degradation according to the entropy law.
