ABSTRACT

The growth rate of the global mobile communications market has surpassed, by a substantial margin, any other form of communications except Internet-and WWW-based computer communication. The dynamics of the rapidly expanding markets is characterised by the exceptionally short life-cycles of wireless handsets and constantly decreasing prices. In the wireless network and service provision sector, the installed user base, as well as the number of new entrants, has soared all over the world. Under these circumstances, management of technologies, marketing, and regulatory regimes pose a great challenge to the equipment manufacturers, service providers and regulatory administrations. In this chapter we shall briefly consider the developments of the global wireless communications markets including its history and envisaged future directions with regard to standards and regulatory considerations.
