ABSTRACT

This final chapter attempts to bring together the underlying themes and issues of Constructing Local Environmental Agendas and puts forward a framework for future progress in Local Agenda 21. Looking towards the millennium there are many reasons for optimism, but as the book has illustrated, there are also major challenges ahead. This book should not be interpreted as a criticism of what has been achieved but rather as an argument for reform and realignment. We also acknowledge that whilst this book takes an anthropocentric approach to sustainable development, we are not trying to sideline the importance of nature which is a foundation of true sustainability (McLaren et al., 1998).
