ABSTRACT

What I want to do in this chapter is to explore three interrelated processes-adult education, community development and cultural diversity-within the context of a deeply divided society, Northern Ireland. I then want to compare and contrast a number of initiatives in Northern Ireland concerned with the role of adult education and community development in improving community relations. Then I want to examine in detail the work of one of those initiatives, the Ulster People’s College, to illustrate how it attempts, in a radical manner, to link together adult education and community development to tackle the problems of community relations and cultural diversity in Northern Ireland.
