ABSTRACT

In this paper we comment and criticize from an ethical and philosophical point of view the ethical and citizenship education contents developed for national curriculum in Argentina. We point out the document’s aspects we consider correct and also those we disagree with, as they do not fit with an ideal of democratic education. Our working hypothesis is to show that there is an incompatibility between some of the contents: those aiming to impose a particular conception of the good life and human flourishing, and those advocating a democratic education for tolerance, reasonable dissent and respect for differences. Finally, we outline an alternative proposal for teaching ethics and citizenship based on universal normative principles. Among other goals, we propose the development of moral judgement, the improvement of the perception of particular situations, the critical discussion of particular cases and the promotion of argumentative capabilities to participate in democratic processes.
