ABSTRACT
In 1991 the census records showed that there were 3,755,554 overseas-born people in Australia and this represented 22 per cent of the population at that time. There are four major categories under which immigration to Australia may occur:
• family migration; • skill migration; • humanitarian entry; • special eligibility (this category has two subdivisions of immigrants, visaed and non-visaed).
