ABSTRACT

To use morphobiometric indices to map the genetic goat resources in Africa, the genetic structure of the populations in question must be known. Work by Muzzolini (1993) and Bouchel & Lauvergne (1995), analyzing how Africa has been populated by domestic goats, has revealed that the genetic structure of the goat populations is most likely to be of a primary type. A primary-type genetic structure is the state of a species’ population during the first stage following its domestication, prior to its fragmentation by man into genetic isolates such as standardized breeds and selected lines.
