ABSTRACT

Some people firmly believe that the hole in the ozone layer is so serious that all life on Earth will cease some time in the next century. Other people believe just as firmly that the presence of a hole is reversible and that all the proposed negative consequences will be alleviated before the end of this century. Yet others believe that there is a hole in the ozone layer and that the people in power are keeping it a secret, and still others believe that there is no hole in the ozone layer at all and that the people who say that there is are scaremongers. What is it that makes different people hold such radically different beliefs? One reason might be a difference in knowledge, but this is unlikely to be the whole story, as we shall see in this chapter.
