ABSTRACT

Over the past few semesters I have been working to involve my students more as participants in their own learning. A natural consequence of placing responsibility for learning with the students is that they also have more input into assessment and evaluation, and ultimately, their final grades. My students are now asked to participate in both self and peer evaluation. Both of these alternate types of assessment provide me with information that I use to determine students’ final grades. While the limited research available on this issue (Burke, 1969) indicates that peer evaluation is more accurate than self evaluation, I have not been pleased with the results of my peer evaluation efforts.
