ABSTRACT
It all began with a simple press release. On 7 December 1993 it was announced that an interregional criminal investigation team (IRT), established in 1989 to fight organized crime in the Netherlands, was to be disbanded. The controversy that ensued in the wake of IRT’s dissolution resulted in banner headlines about police involvement in drug trafficking, a major Parliamentary Inquiry and a crisis in the criminal investigation system.
