Introduction Modern elite sport is increasingly based on scientific research. The Norwegian University for Sport and Physical Education (NUSPE) has played a central role in sport research in Norway after the institution was established in 1968. In Norway all sport, both mass and elite sport, is organized in one sport organization, the Norwegian Sport Federation (NIF). Since the late 1980s collaboration in sport research between NUSPE and NIF has been increasing. The Norwegian Sport Federation has established an Elite Sport Center and an Olympic Sport Program (Olympiatoppen) with around 150 athletes who are sponsored by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the Norwegian Sport Federation. The Elite Sport center is adjacent to the sport university (NUSPE) with proximity for strong links in research and sport development.
