ABSTRACT

As noted in the Introduction to this book, the development of partnership has been a dominant theme amongst the range of issues involved in teacher education. There has been a longstanding professional commitment from teachers in schools and higher education to the development of ways of working together, to provide in particular a range of practical teaching experiences for students on initial teacher training (ITT) courses for school education. More recently, the concept of partnership for ITT has widened to include further education. The shift in responsibility and funding for staff development from LEAs to individual schools and further education colleges has also focused attention on the important role of higher education in supporting the induction and continuing professional development of teachers. Partnership is thus being extended to include such staff development. Partnership should therefore be considered in relation to the range of needs and contributions of schools, further education colleges and higher education institutions.
