ABSTRACT

One such scheme is the Articled Teacher initiative. This scheme, first introduced in 1990 and now no longer available, was founded upon a partnership between LEAs, schools and institutions of higher education. It was set up as an alternative approach to the traditional Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and comprised a two-year programme. Although articled teachers spent considerably more time in schools than students on conventional courses, the involvement of higher education was required. The award of a standard teaching qualification was ensured, as well as some form of quality assurance and academic integrity.
