ABSTRACT

In this chapter we review main themes to emerge from the contributions to the book, and put forward some conclusions.

UNDERSTANDING PLAYGROUND BEHAVIOUR

The value to adults of knowing more about playground behaviour

If asked about their pupils’ playground activities, teachers may well show interest, but other demands in school quite understandably tend to dominate. The added pressures brought about by the introduction of the National Curriculum and the accompanying assessment arrangements have made it even more difficult to focus attention on what happens during recreational breaks. So the arguments in favour of adults looking seriously at playground behaviour need to be strong. There is space here to mention only a few.
