ABSTRACT

ALTHOUGH the Iwakura Mission spent just four weeks in Germany, Kume Kunitake in his work Bei-O kairan jikki allocates 10 chapters to this country, indicating the importance given to Germany. This was due to its military, economic strength and its progress in science, but Kume was also responding to the cordial treatment the Japanese mission received during its stay. German newspaper articles indeed reflect the positive attitude towards emerging Japan.
