ABSTRACT
The key player in the relations between the two countries at the time was Count Fè d’Ostiani, appointed minister plenipotentiary for China and Japan in 1870, just over a year before the Iwakura mission set out for the Western world. The count was later to return to Italy to accompany the members of the mission during their visit there from 8 May to 3 June 1873.
