ABSTRACT

The last few decades have seen dramatic changes in the concept of edu-cation’s role in society, as well as in the types of students in the educational system. Yet, the teacher education curriculum in Canada has not responded to the needs of a changing demography. The curriculum initiatives in the school system are important, but no amount of curriculum material can make a significant difference if teachers, who present and translate the material, do not have the knowledge, attitude and commitment to the ideological change implied in equity and justice. As Marshall McLuhan (1964) has pointed out, the medium is the message.
