ABSTRACT

The multidisciplinary research described in this chapter has received joint funding from EAGA Charitable Trust, East London and the City Health Authority and the Local Authority (Housing Strategy Department). This study attempts to understand the relationship between fuel poverty and health and the impact energy efficiency interventions have on households suffering from fuel poverty and health problems. Detailed information is being gathered through a structured questionnaire and two in-depth interviews on people’s perceptions and understandings of the relationship between their home heating practices, consumption of fuel and selfreported ill-health in the household. The research focuses on the response to and effects of energy efficiency advice in 24 households and capital investments in a few of the selected households in the public sector. The results are based on the data collected from the structured questionnaire with the baseline sample of 89, as well as extracts from the first stage of indepth interviews with the final sample.
