ABSTRACT

Maryam (1) (Ar.) Mary, the name of the mother of 'Īsā (q.v.) in the Qur'ān. She figures prominently at the beginning of the 19th sura which is named after her Sūrat Maryam (q.v.). However, she is also mentioned in many other places, always with great respect. The basic information about the conception of 'Īsā, given in Sūrat Maryam, is considerably elaborated by the tafsīr (q.v.) literature. It has been pointed out by Geoffrey Parrinder that Maryam 'is the only woman who is called by her proper name in the Qur'ān'. The purity of Maryam has been championed by Muslims from earliest times.
