ABSTRACT

Uhud, Battle of Second major battle fought between the Prophet Muhammad supported by the Medinans, and the Meccans. It took place in 3/625 at Uhud, a hill to the West of Medina (q.v.). The Meccans were led by Abu Sufyān (q.v.). In strictly military terms the result of the battle was a draw: it is true that Muhammad was wounded and his uncle Hamza b. 'Abd alMuttalib (q.v.) killed together with more than seventy Muslims. But Muhammad and his Muslim community still remained in Medina. (See Khālid b. al-Walīd; Mecca; Sūrat al-Nisā'.) 'Ukāz Town South-East of Mecca (q.v.) where an annual fair was held in pre-Islamic times, for several weeks. Much poetry was recited during the fair which was, however, abolished by the Prophet Muhammad.
