ABSTRACT

Although there is an increasing amount of literature devoted to the development of ‘community archaeology’, the notion of collaborative practice in our discipline remains a vague concept, with many assuming that it refers simply to consultation with local communities. ‘Community archaeology’, however, goes far beyond that, incorporating a range of strategies designed to facilitate the involvement of local people in the investigation and interpretation of the past. In this chapter, we outline a methodology for ensuring effective community involvement in the study of the archaeological resource, the development of which has been the subject of a major research project in the city of Quseir, situated on the Red Sea coast of Egypt.
