ABSTRACT
Summary of key points
People with mental health problems experience discrimination and exclusion in all areas of daily life, work, education and access to services.
Discrimination and exclusion are probably the greatest barriers to recovery from mental health problems.
Community mental health nurses can help to decrease exclusion, and thereby facilitate recovery, by: focusing on people's strengths and possibilities rather than their deficits and dysfunctions; fostering hope; and facilitating access to valued opportunities.
