ABSTRACT

Globalization is, for sure, a new “pet theme” among scholars today. With respect to the history of Islam in Indonesia, however, “globalization” is not really a new phenomenon. In fact, there has been a continuous “globalization” of Indonesian Muslim discourse since relatively early in the history of Islam in the region. The centre of the global system Indonesian Islam was a part of, both religiously and intellectually, was the Haramayn, i.e. The Two Protected Cities, Mecca and Medina.
