ABSTRACT

Despite dramatic improvements in drug therapy since the mid1970s, the rehabilitation of Parkinson’s disease and related syndromes is still a major challenge. Medication still does not offer a cure but provides symptom control and prolongs survival to give a life expectancy that is near to normal (Clarke, 1993). The aims of rehabilitation are to assist the individual to maintain optimal function, to prevent secondary complications, and to help and educate carers and patients in the process of adapting to problems as they develop.
