ABSTRACT

This chapter takes up some of the issues raised in the conclusion to the case study in Chapter 10. It looks at developments already being undertaken in mainstream schools to create for bilingual learners, as for all learners, a supportive and stimulating learning environment. Neil Parr is Head of the Language and Curriculum Access Service in another London borough. Neil was not a participant on the course, but was invited to make a contribution to this section of the book in order to expand on the potential for development to meet the needs of bilingual learners within mainstream education. He explains what, in his view, helps to make a school a genuinely multilingual establishment, and describes some innovative work currently being undertaken by schools to take account of the cultural and linguistic diversity of their pupils.
