ABSTRACT

The general, comparative issue addressed in this volume concerns the democratization of one-party regimes-how, and the conditions under which, one-party regimes (or dominant or predominant party regimes) become more competitive. The issue I take up here is a little more specific: to problematize the democratization of a particular type of dominantparty regime, one in which the dominant party is a labor-based party (LBP), that is, a party with a core support base in the labor movement. I explore this issue by examining the case of Mexico.
