ABSTRACT

Although the National Abortion Campaign (NAC) is commonly identified as ‘the streetfighter's end of the pro-choice movement’, its membership of over 800 organizations and individuals undoubtedly makes it Britain's largest and most successful pro-choice campaign. Since its inception in 1975, NAC has predominantly campaigned on a grass-roots level, and has successfully raised, as well as influenced, public awareness and opinion. Although the aims and strategies of the organization have been very political and although the bulk of its support in terms of money and membership has historically come from the Left, it has never been party political.
