ABSTRACT

This approach produced a surprising variety of assignment ideas: ‘The use and abuse of prescribed drugs’; ‘Manufacturing hair gel’; ‘The hole in the ozone layer’; ‘Catalytic converters’; and even ‘Is chemistry useful to Gary Lineker?’—were some recent examples. Of course, old chestnuts such as ‘Acid rain’ and ‘Nuclear power-is it a good thing?’ retain a steady following, but we feel that the widening of options has created extra interest, even excitement, for our students in completing what can sometimes be seen as ‘yet another piece of coursework’.
