ABSTRACT

Agriculture and fisheries are controversial policy areas for both the European Union (EU) and the Nordic countries. The two policy areas are linked, in the sense that they are concerned with food supply, and are heavily regulated. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) are governed by the same part of the Treaty. Article 39 of the Treaty of Rome states that there should be a rational development of production and the optimum utilisation of the factors of production, in particular, of labour. There should be a fair standard of living for agricultural workers. Markets should be stabilised and supplies available. Products should also reach the consumer at reasonable prices.
