ABSTRACT
Contemporary nursing leaders have rallied around the idea of caring, claiming this as the historic core of nursing and thus the field’s ‘special knowledge’. This present chapter challenges the claim to caring by suggesting that caring may simply be one of several traditions that have been handed down to succeeding generations of nurses.
