ABSTRACT

Within the context of liberal democracy the presence of political parties is an essential dimension, since parties confirm political choice, and the acceptance of political differences and political priorities. Political parties reinforce the ethics of pluralism and diversity in that, first, they seek to represent different views and perceptions, and second, they provide electors with the opportunity to choose between policy alternatives. Political parties are associated with values and perceptions that seek to reflect those of the communities they seek to represent. They provide the mechanism that allows for the differences of opinion and arguments that are essential for the continuity of the democratic process.
