ABSTRACT

No doubt Sweden has changed during the last decade - fast, thoroughly and seemingly irrevocably. To varying degrees these changes affect many different sectors of society. One sector radically altered is the Swedish media scene. During the last decade a series of both powerful and attractive mass media have became available to the public at large. The VCR was introduced in the beginning of the 1980s; in the middle of the decade, satellite and cable television became increasingly diffused; the access to personal computers in the home has increased, as has also the number of games played on these computers or on TV and video - all of them quickly adopted, not least by families with children and adolescents. At the same time access to CDplayers, personal stereos (Walkmans) and tape recorders has increased, especially among adolescents (see Chapter 2).
