ABSTRACT

Social work practice has been built on the premise of service to the individual. The practitioner sees his task not only as assisting the client in recognizing his position and needs in relation to the broader society but also in determining how best to reconcile himself to the demands and norms being imposed by that broader society. In order to function effectively, the practitioner must have a clear view of that broader society. Inevitably that must involve a perception of the nature of multi-racial Britain and how the issue of race has affected the general direction of our society. We can no longer sustain the pretence that Britain is a mono-ethnic society.
