ABSTRACT

A 75-year-old black woman has this to say about how she passes her time in the day: ‘I sit here like this [hand on chin], I look at people passing down, nobody comes in to see us. I said, Lord send somebody. Sometimes they would comenot often but sometimes they would come-a good friend would come to see what we are doing and have a talk with us and bring us some little thing.’ As she wipes the tears she also describes the financial problems: paraffin heating that costs over £5 every other week; gas and electricity bills; little money.
