ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore strategies of care and support for elderly people on discharge fron hospital. The ideas arose from work conducted as part of an evaluation of a hospital discharge service in South Glamorgan, one of a growing number of intensive support schemes run, for the most part, as ‘pilot schemes’, by voluntary organizations (see Russell 1986). Such schemes may be directly linked with their predecessors thirty years ago, again provided by the voluntary sector—the experimental rest homes for elderly people.
