ABSTRACT

In order that we can critically review the recent policy and practice developments that have been implemented to challenge racism amongst Britain’s young people, we need first to examine the macro setting in which this has taken place. Our discussion will therefore commence by exploring the contemporary social, economic and political scene in the Uk. We will then move to specifically consider the area of “race”, including the rise and role of far-right and fascist groups and the response by anti-racist groups. The discussion will continue by focusing on youth policy and youth work in the Uk before examining the strategies that have been deployed to address the issue of “race” and racism. Finally, the chapter will assess what this means in practice.
