ABSTRACT

MAKING A VISIBLE DIFFERENCE The process of establishing oneself as a practising artist is arduous and treacherous, and few are expected to survive. This is especially true for the Black artist. The artist Rasheed Araeen, who came from Pakistan to London in 1964, was once told by a friend:

If you want to be a successful artist, stop criticising the establishment. Try to make friends in the art world. This is a very sophisticated society and you must develop sophisticated responses to it. You can’t bite the hand that feeds you, particularly when the hand is white and the mouth is black.
