ABSTRACT

From the printing press to the Internet, the impact and influence of the media have been determined and defined by advances in technology. In the same way, the history of architecture has been indissolubly linked to the discovery of new materials and the development of engineering science, generating continuous innovation in construction techniques. As society moves out of the mechanical and into the electronic engineering era, questions surrounding the meaning of the material object and its life cycle, and of the way that individual human identity is manifested through the production and use of physical objects, are equally significant in debates about the media and about architecture.
