ABSTRACT

Chronologically and thematically, the coverage of the Centre in the Swedish media can be separated into three periods. During the first period, from late 1994 to early 1995, the Centre is introduced to the public. In the second period, lasting from mid 1995 to early April 1996, the Centre is identified in the media as a clinic specializing in eating disorders among athletes, and its therapeutic practice is presented as an alternative to psychiatric treatment. In the third period, covering September 1996 to May 1997, the recurrent themes are: results of treatment, queues for treatment, costs of treatments, and the allocation of funds to psychiatry versus the Centre. Bureaucratic inertia and political inability to act are also focused upon. In the three periods women play various roles.
