ABSTRACT

My thesis in this chapter is that one of the factors behind women’s decision making relating to ‘employment mobility’ may be a perceived need to maintain a balance between commodified (paid) work and uncommodified (unpaid) domestic work. By ‘employment mobility’, I am referring principally to three types of movement:

1 from outside the labour market into paid work; 2 from part-time to full-time paid work; 3 from a lower to a higher post (via promotion).
