ABSTRACT
The elite sport system in West Germany (up to 1990) is an example of the development of high-performance competitive sport in a highly developed industrial and service economy country, in which the sport sector contributes over 1.4 per cent of gross domestic product, that is more than either agriculture or iron and steel production in Germany.
