ABSTRACT

A version of this article appears in the journal Technology Analysis & Strategic Management, 8, 4:455-66. In this chapter I address the ‘process’ of globalisation in Europe in the case of ‘retail’ financial network design with specific reference to the case of EFTPOS-Electronic Funds Transfer at the Point of Sale. The central issue is the role of technology in the process of globalisation and whether the implementation of network technology necessarily increases the global standardisation of financial services. Technical language will be explained as it is introduced, but the reader who finds the technical acronyms of the subject hard to remember may want to refer to the glossary at the end of the chapter.
