ABSTRACT

Particular attention has been drawn in recent years to the increasing proportion of older people within Western populations. We are repeatedly reminded that in the UK the proportion of people over the age of 60 will increase by more than 65 per cent by the year 2030, such that the current proportion of 20 per cent comprised of over-60s will increase to 33 per cent (e.g. Greengross et al., 1997; Khaw, 1997). These increases are suggested to be the result of decreased mortality, and the consequent increased longevity is suggested to be due to a reduction in childhood illnesses and infectious diseases, and an increase in primary and secondary preventative health measures and improved nutrition (Office of National Statistics, 1996).
