ABSTRACT
In the late 1970s, there was the so-called imagery debate. The core of the debate was the question of whether a unitary (conceptual) system was sufficient to explain all cognitive performance. The debate ended with the conclusion that a clear decision cannot be reached, because any pattern of performance can be explained by any appropriate mixture of structural and process assumptions (e.g., Anderson, 1978).
