ABSTRACT
Territory, which included Illinois, was established May 7, 1800. Illinois Territory was established Febmary 2, 1809. Illinois entered the Union as the 21st state December 3, 1818.
Illinois is divided into 102 counties. 88 counties are divided into townships with governments having broad powers. 14 counties are divided into precincts with no governments. Municipalities are classified as villages, towns, and cities. See Introduction.
