Northern U.S. Capital: Lansing. Major city: Detroit. The region became part of the U.S. as the Northwest Territory in 1787. It became part
of Indiana Territory January 4, 1805. Michigan Territory was established January 11, 1805, and included present-day Wisconsin. Michigan entered the Union as the 26th state on January 26, 1837, the same date that Wisconsin became a territory.
