ABSTRACT

Territory, which included Nevada, was created on September 9, 1850. Nevada Territory separated from Utah on March 2, 1861. Nevada entered the U.S. as the 36th state October 31, 1864.

Nevada is divided into 16 counties. There is one independent city, Carson City. In 1969, Ormsby County went out of existence when Carson City annexed the county and eliminated the county government. Municipalities are classified as cities. Many Nevada towns are unincorporated. See Introduction.
