ABSTRACT

I've been drawing characters with digital media for years, ever since I began messing around with the Smudge tool in Photoshop Elements when I was 14. I started out very cartoony but developed a fondness for digital painting a few years ago, realizing that this could give my characters much more depth and mass, making them more real and believable somehow. Around the time that I drew this image, I wanted to push myself a little further and create more of a realistic feel than I had done in my previous images by adding more detail (especially in the hands and face), and working with a more atmospheric light source — that of a sunset. I was inspired by occasions of experiencing sunsets on the beach during the summer and the serene, timeless feeling this evoked.
