ABSTRACT

Baba Yaga was created for a Character of the Week activity at conceptart.org. I didn't know about Slavic folklore at that time and so spent a bit of time reading up on the background history of the tale. It's a rather dark tale about an old witch (hag) who flies around in a giant mortar preying on small children! I was instantly drawn to the story and wanted to create a really sinister witch. A quick search online turned up a large collection of previously created Baba Yaga interpretations by other artists, which worked as a huge inspiration for me, and I hastily started drawing up my initial designs of the old hag. Throughout this account, I will try and summarize my working methods and share my thoughts during the process.
